WOOD RESTORATION

Can anyone restore wood?.....Of course, to some degree.

However, certified professionals are trained in wood restoration and doing it properly. The following will help explain some of the pitfalls the homeowner and as a matter of fact, some contractors make when tackling a restoration project. Also look at the detail involved and what the homeowner should look for in a contractor.

One of the first things to consider when starting a restoration project is the history of the wood itself ( deck, logs, dock, etc..). What is the condition of the wood? Is there an existing coating and if so, what type, how many layers and how old is it? The answers to these questions will dictate which procedures must be taken to successfully restore the wood.

When determining the restoration process, consideration must be given to what kind of new sealer will be applied and the differences of each, (Simi-transparent, Simi-solid, Solid, Oil or Latex) all which will play a part in deciding the actual wood preparation process.

Preparing the wood for finishing will consist of either washing the wood, deep cleaning the wood or stripping the wood. Each process has its place and is a major step in the restoration process. Depending on what type of cleaning/stripping (acidic, alkaline or caustic) is required will determine what type of rinsing, neutralizing or both will be needed.

Depending on all prior factors, this will dictate proper water pressure which is critical to keep from fuzzing and chewing up the wood, proper nozzle tip size and chemical application. If anyone is not familiar with these procedures, they probably will do more harm than good by compromising the integrity of the wood or just end up with a project that will fail prematurely.

To restore exterior wood correctly, it takes much more than a high-pressure washer and a gallon of bleach!
The pressure cleaning industry often has a bad reputation because of part-timers with a home improvement “power washer” and five gallions of bleach in their pick up truck.

They are called POWER washers for a reason. 3000 pounds of pressure in the hands of the untrained certainly has the potential to cause some major damage to wood, vinyl siding, windows and even concrete.
